THERE OUGHT TO BE A LAW - Each year in Canada we abort more than 100,000 little ones. In 2007, Alberta lost 12,000 little ones to abortion. All with taxpayers' money. It adds ups. DID YOU KNOW? On May 14, 1969 abortion was legalized in Canada. Today, there are no legal restrictions on when a baby can be aborted, from 0 to 9 months. This is one of the most liberalized systems in the world. DID YOU KNOW? Doctors are not required to specify a medical reason for abortion when they submit billings to Alberta Health. (Despite the fact that Alberta Health claims to fund only medically necessary procedures?) DID YOU KNOW? Fewer than 5% of abortions are performed as medical emergencies because of serious health problems for women, according to the former president of Alberta Medical Association, Dr. Richard Kennedy. In 1988 Abortionist Dr. Henry Morgentaler, stated that less than one tenth of one per cent of abortions are done for serious health emergencies. MONEY MATTERS - Abortion is funded by each province that chooses to fund this medically unnecessary procedure. Provinces are not required by federal law to fund abortion. Regardless, Alberta taxpayers shelled out between $6 million and $8 million for 12,000 abortions in 2007/08 alone. Abortion is funded with taxpayer dollars, but is mostly performed in private clinics such as the one in Kensington in Calgary and the Woman's Health Options (formerly known as The Morgentaler Clinic) in Edmonton. It is a business, and our supporters do not believe Albertans should be in the Abortion Business. THE ISSUE OF CHOICE - The issue is framed as one of choice. (Not sure why if it's a woman's choice, the woman doesn't have to pay). What is the choice? To keep the baby, or not? Sounds harmless. Let's break it down a little further. The choice is to bring the baby to term and give natural birth (pregnancy is a perfectly natural state) and either raise the child or adopt the little one into a waiting family. The other option is to abort the child. It is not the woman who "gets" an abortion, but the child who "is" aborted. To be aborted means to be forcibly removed (typically limb by limb) from your mother's womb, the one and only sanctuary you have in the world. It means to be dismembered and discarded, or to be burned alive through a saline solution - again in your mother's womb, or to be scraped or suctioned out of the womb. Abortion means death. It is not a choice that enhances the life of the baby, or the mother, or the father. BABY NEEDS A WOMB - The womb is necessary to life. When a woman has sex, there is the possibility of becoming pregnant. (Even in the rare and painful cases when a woman aborts because she was raped, many say they regret the abortion. In every case, choosing life is the healthy choice). While some argue the fetus (which is Latin for little one) is not "fully" human, no one can argue the fetus is not human. It is a human in its first phases of life. It is smaller, less developed and entirely dependent on its mother for life... but so is a two-year-old. If you apply the arguments for abortion to the case of toddler being inconvenient, all consuming, life changing and even unwelcome in a relationship, the case breaks down. You would not kill your two-year-old son or daughter for these reasons. Yet, these are the very same reasons people use to justify killing their unborn. (For more information along these lines, check out Scott Klusendorf's www.prolifeinstitute.com or Randy Alcorn's Abortion 101 ). LANGUAGE OF LIES - Further, about one-quarter of all abortions are repeat procedures. That means women are having more than one child aborted, which suggests these are not all 'crisis pregnancies,' as the abortion industry would have us believe. The language is subtle, but so important. This is not a transparent industry. It enjoys a vocal and influential dose of public support. But, the truth is that a majority does not support tax-funded abortions and the status quo is unacceptable. It's time to open the door on the abortion clinics (privately run in Alberta), and to start asking some really good questions - on behalf of so many little ones lost to such a lucrative industry, and those who mourn their loss. ------------ GOOD NEWS - The good news is that the church, especially the Catholic Church, is becoming more vocal and involved. We applaud preachers, pastors and priests who bring this issue forward. A significant percentage of women who obtain abortions are found in local congregations. Healing and real education is required. More politicians are now willing to call a spade a spade. For many, taking a stand on this issue means risking their political career. Please support those willing to do so. Give them a call. Say thank you. TO CONTACT YOUR MLA - go to http://alberta.ca/home/documents/Ministry_Listing.pdf Culturally, fewer young people are obtaining abortions, and more of them are standing up for their right to reproduce and to be fully informed. Movies such as Juno and Bella and plenty of YouTube videos are promoting the value of having baby, loving your body and respecting each person's right to life - no matter how small. On our campuses, students are standing up by forming pro-life groups of their own, hosting the Silent No More campaigns and even hosting graphic displays of the aborted as part of the Genocide Awareness Project (GAP) through the Canadian Centre for Bio-ethical Reform (CCBR). Some students have faced charges in Calgary for refusing to remove the disturbing displays, and some former abortion-advocates now speak out as pro-lifers. Each year, the youth of Alberta are invited to host an ASLAN conference to promote and uphold pro-life values, with the support of Alberta Pro-Life through a local group.
Our supporters applaud all those standing up for the little ones, from teachers, to students, to doctors and nurses, to politicians, to the parents and former victims of the abortion industry. We applaud those who speak out in public, or in the pulpit. We applaud those who work behind the scenes to bring about change and restoration. Please, don't give up. Be strong. Be courageous. YOU are making a difference. |
